Description from Amazon
Fast & Furious meets Pacific Rim. Nobody has taken part in the Devil’s Run annual road race as often as Dutch McGuire and lived to tell the tale. The racecourse circumnavigates the post-apocalyptic ruins of Teijouan, and with a choice between being eaten by the monstrous Kaiju that prowl the island’s devastated cities or murdered by her fellow racers, the odds against surviving another Run, let alone winning it, are slim.
Dutch doesn’t care about the odds nearly so much as she cares about getting back behind the wheel of her beloved Ford Falcon—except for one problem: she’s spent the last five years incarcerated in a high-security prison for her part in a heist.
So when a crooked billionaire offers to put her back in the race on condition she uses it as cover for a secret retrieval operation, she can’t refuse.
Can Dutch survive assassins, monsters, and psychopathic drivers long enough to complete her mission as well as take part in the race—or is this the year death finally catches up with her?
A fast and fun read, filled with retro- Godzilla type monsters, prison breakouts, madmax style racing vehicles, Russian gangsters, scientists run amok, and a whole heaping pile of bad ass heroine, in the form of Dutch Maguire, our main character.
Great from the start, as we meet Dutch getting out of a life sentence, in spectacular prison break style, and on the road to participate (in exchange for her freedom) in a race across an island filled with competitors ready to kill to win. Having to avoid the obstacles that make this such a dangerous game, mind destroying energy fields, monsters, or Kaiju, that have made the island their home as a result of a tear in reality. As well as frightening gigantic creatures, some with shape shifting and mind reading abilities, that do what monsters do. The race is held once a year, big money on the line, mysterious racers, some almost with some James Bond vibes (did I mention there are some killer retro vibes in here?)
The reasons Dutch has been picked for the race, become more complicated than at first glance, and she is in a position where she might not even be able to trust those that are supposed to be helping her.
I really enjoyed the fast and fun feeling to this, especially being a different sort of scifi or fantasy type of book I’ve been getting into lately. The writing was perfect and, left the door open to another tale led by Dutch.
I was able to listen to the audiobook version read by Aleksi Graves, and thought she did a fantastic job with the different characters, as well as the emotions and intensity of the situations.
Thank you to the author, Gary Gibson and Audiobook Book Boom who provided me an advance copy in exchange for a fair review!
